Depersonalization

Definition

Depersonalization is a subjective experience of feeling detached from one's own thoughts, emotions, body, or actions. Patients may feel like they are "watching" themselves, observing their experiences like a spectator.

Common Symptoms

  • Feeling that one's thoughts are not their own
  • Feeling emotionally "numb" or hollow
  • Feeling that one's body is unreal or distorted
  • Feeling like on "autopilot"
  • Feeling that memories belong to someone else

Common Triggers

  • Acute stress or trauma
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Hyperventilation
  • Certain medications or substances
  • Anxiety disorders, depression

Coping Strategies

  1. Grounding techniques: Focus on the present through sensory awareness
  2. Deep breathing: Slow, rhythmic breathing
  3. Cognitive reframing: Identify and challenge maladaptive thoughts
  4. Regular routine: Ensure adequate sleep

:::tip Remember Depersonalization is a protective mechanism, not a sign of "madness". It can be understood and managed. :::
