Definition
Depersonalization is a subjective experience of feeling detached from one's own thoughts, emotions, body, or actions. Patients may feel like they are "watching" themselves, observing their experiences like a spectator.
Common Symptoms
- Feeling that one's thoughts are not their own
- Feeling emotionally "numb" or hollow
- Feeling that one's body is unreal or distorted
- Feeling like on "autopilot"
- Feeling that memories belong to someone else
Common Triggers
- Acute stress or trauma
- Sleep deprivation
- Hyperventilation
- Certain medications or substances
- Anxiety disorders, depression
Coping Strategies
- Grounding techniques: Focus on the present through sensory awareness
